What is it that truly elevates films, commercials, tweets, pictures, or a memes from ordinary to great? Sure it helps if you’ve already released award winning movies, or you have already reached twitter fame, or you make memes for a living, but that doesn’t account for those overnight phenomenons that catapult people from average joes to stardom. Matt Damon and Ben Aflect are prime examples of such success when they teamed up to write their first screenplay. They were aspiring actors so they used their acting experience to turn Damon’s short story into what would win best screenplay at the Oscar’s and the Golden Globe Awards. But how, what set this apart from the films that were written by all of the professionals?
It’s said that in order to understand how to write a screenplay they studied the countless screenplays that they’d been in, and apparently they weren’t very good so when writing scenes they would begin to act them out and improvise. By recording this they were able to review several attempts and decide on the appropriate direction to pursue. Not only did they sell this screenplay for 6 figures they also were two of the lead roles in the film. And if that wasn’t enough after that they were given crazy amounts of money to make movie after movie.
It’s this new age of technology and availability of broadcasting individual ideas that make the possibility of overnight success slightly more realistic. Your chances may still be one in a million but the fact remains information can be spread faster than ever and when something starts to gain popularity the attention it receives grows at an exponential rate.
In part I believe the combination of proven traditional components of valued media and the individuals unique vision and approach to carry out deep meaning are all of great importance when identifying the components that comprise greatness.
